We will debate farmers, herders clash — Senate

Written by on February 9, 2021

Senate will today debate on clashes between farmers and herders in parts of the country.

Leader of the Senate, Yahaya Abdullahi, who confirmed this while addressing journalists at his office in Abuja, said his deputy, Ajayi Boroffice, would raise a motion on the issue.

While noting that local political leaders should be encouraged to find a lasting solution, Abdullahi said the Federal Government had a role to play in resolving the crisis.

He underscored the need for urgent attention at various levels of government, due to the ethnic coloration of the herders/farmers clashes, to prevent further escalation.

The lawmaker said the Senate was worried by the security threats in the country, including armed banditry and Boko Haram insurgency, and warned that if the issue remained unabated, development may not be achieved.

On Senate confirmation of the ex-service chiefs as ambassadors, Abdullahi said the Senate would mandate its Committee on Foreign Affairs to deliberate on the issue.
