Going by the popular saying that in a democracy, the people get the kind of government they deserve, Ukrainians have settled for a comedian, with no experience in politics, as their new president.
The president-elect, Volodymyr Zelensky, defeated incumbent, Petro Poroshenko, in the country’s presidential elections.
Zelensky scored a landslide victory in the run-off vote, claiming more than seventy three percent, with Poroshenko trailing far behind on twenty-four percent.
In his victory speech, the President-elect promised to justify the confidence reposed on him by Ukrainians.
Reacting, outgoing President Poroshenko, who admitted defeat, however warned that forty-one-year-old Zelensky was too inexperienced to stand up to Russia effectively.
In the meantime, Russia has tasked Zelensky to show sound judgment, honesty and pragmatism so that relations with Ukraine will improve.
