The legislature and executive in Abia state have come under fire for suspending the Chief Judge, Justice Theresa Uzokwe and swearing-in of Justice Obisike Orji as Acting Chief Judge of the State, without the input of the National Judicial Council.

The National Judicial Council in a statement signed by the Director of Information, Soji Oye, described the actions of the House of Assembly and the governor, as unconstitutional, null and void.

The council also suspended Justice Obisike Orji, who was subsequently sworn in by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, as the Acting Chief Judge.

The NJC directed the third most senior judge in the judiciary of the state to step in as the Acting Chief Judge pending the conclusion of investigations of allegations of acts of misconduct leveled against Justices Uzokwe and Orji.
