Plans are afoot by the federal government to establish new marriage registries in Uyo and Umuahia to address the challenges faced by couples in the South-South and South-East regions.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Georgina Ehuriah, who stated this in Port Harcourt, said marriage registries would also be set-up in thirty six state capitals of the country to ensure uniformity in the conduct of statutory marriages across Nigeria.
Ehuriah said the ministry was also considering extending the validity period for licences issued to places of worship for the celebration of marriages, as well as downward review of the fees payable by couples for the conduct of statutory marriages in Federal marriage registries.
According to her, machineries have been put in place for the amendment of the Marriage Act to adequately meet the needs of the 21st century.
