NBC sanctions sixty erring broadcast stations over non-compliance with operational codes

Written by on July 15, 2019

Operators of radio and television stations across Nigeria have been tasked to strictly comply with operational codes or surrender the licences granted them by the Federal Government.

Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Ishaq Kawu, who sounded the warning in Abuja, said flouting the prescribed code of operation by broadcast stations would no longer be tolerated.

Kawu noted that the Commission has already imposed fines on sixty broadcast stations for breaching the broadcast code in relation to hate speech and incitement of the public during the 2019 general election.

He said despite being owed billions of naira by licences, the NBC was progressing with its digital switchover project to bring Nigeria at par with other nations in digital broadcasting, adding that the programme was flagged off in Jos, Plateau State in 2016 and will be taken to other cities across the country.
