FALANA

Still from the Senate, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has described the suspension of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege by the Senate, “illegal”.

Falana said no legislative House has the power to remove or suspend any of its members, adding that only a court of law or the constituents have the authority to do so.

The Lagos Lawyer explained that when a legislator is suspended, the constituency he or she represents would no longer be represented in that House, noting that such act is not in tandem with the law.

He recalled that a female lawmaker in Bauchi House of Assembly, who was suspended indefinitely over a statement she made on the floor of the House, took the matter up to the Court of Appeal, which held that the legislative House had no such powers.
