Ethiopia’s new Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, has been sworn in by Parliament.

The new Prime Minister has the mandate to implement democratic reforms aimed at defusing ethnic tensions in the Oromiya province from which he hails.

The ruling coalition picked Abiy last week to replace Hailemariam Desalegn who quit to give way for reforms.

Forty two year old Abiy took the oath of office in a ceremony at attended by four hundred and seventy eight Parliament members in Addis Ababa.

In an inaugural speech, Abiy stressed on the need for unity and reform in the Eastern Africa nation.

He expressed his readiness to negotiate with the Eritrean government, to solve the differences between the two states, even as he promised to crackdown on rampant corruption in Ethiopia.
