Resident Doctors seek audience with President Buhari over lingering strike

Written by on September 14, 2021

Striking doctors under the aegis of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, NARD have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to involve them in subsequent meetings with the Nigerian Medical Association.

The association’s Vice President, Adejo Arome made the appeal in an interview and noted that human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, would be leading NARD’s legal team to the National Industrial Court tomorrow, September 15.

While accusing Nigeria Medical Association, NMA of sidelining its officials, Arome said the President should have met the leaders of NARD alongside those of the NMA.

He said NMA is a parent body supervising the association,  however, Resident doctors are the individuals affected in the stalemate with the Federal government.

Recall that a 16-man delegate of the NMA met with President Buhari last Friday on major issues in the health sector, particularly the current strike by resident doctors.

The President urged them to call off the strike, with the assurance that his administration would offset all the debts it owed them.

Meanwhile, The Joint Health Sector Unions, JOHESU has written to the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, on the welfare demands of its members.

The union, in a letter signed by its Chairman, Bio Josiah also knocked the Nigeria Medical Association for allegedly meddling in its affairs and its claims that the best welfare conditions were enjoyed by physicians in the civil service.

Josiah asked the federal government to respect the spirit of its agreement with JOHESU in 2014 which compels it to adjust its wages anytime government adjusts the wages of the beneficiaries of the CONMESS scale.

The group also challenged NMA hierarchy to show evidence-based data that it does not have consultants in Pharmacy, Nursing, Radiography, Physiotherapy, and Medical Laboratory Science as they had alleged.

Josiah further stated that the current events and attitude of the NMA would be a test case to see what the FG was prepared to do on JOHESU demands.
