MIGHTY GEORGE
George Iniabasi Essien is an award-winning broadcaster and sports journalist, with a decade and half experience in the media.
Nicknamed “Mighty George’, he is the reigning ‘Radio Presenter of The Year’ (Nigeria Broadcasting Awards 2023) – the highest awards for Nigerian broadcasters. He is also a recipient of the Nigeria Sports Award for ‘Sports Journalist of the Year’ (2018); United Nations Award for ‘Best Sports Presenter in Nigeria’ (2019); South-South Sports Journalist of the Year (2022); Akwa Ibom Sports Presenter of The Year (2020), Most Outstanding Sports Presenter in Nigeria (2016), among a number of other awards.
Owner of the popular moniker ‘What A Rush’, Mighty George has headed Sports and Presentation desks at Sports Radio Brila FM, Nigeria’s only sports radio station, where he spent seven years; Radio Continental, Lagos; and now Comfort 95.1 FM, Uyo, where he currently serves as Head of Programmes and Senior International Correspondent.
George is a well-travelled Nigerian sports journalist, covering a number of FIFA World Cups and Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). He is a member of the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), Sports Writers Association of Nigerian (SWAN), and an alumnus of London School of Journalism and Barcelona Sports Institute.
A sports blogger and football administrator, Mighty George equally a Chief in his homeland, having been conferred in December 2023 with the traditional title ‘UTIN IBIONO’ meaning ‘SUNLIGHT OF IBIONO’, by the Paramount Ruler of Ibiono-Ibom in the Nigerian state of Akwa Ibom State, where he hails from.
