Labour says no strike yet as new minimum wage negotiations continue today

Workers in Nigeria may now have to wait a little longer for conclusion of negotiations on the consequential adjustment in their salaries occasioned by the new minimum wage.

This is because a meeting between the federal government and labor leaders which lasted about nine hours, ended in the early hours of today, without definite decisions.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, who presided over the meeting, told newsmen that specific jobs had been given to some committees that must be submitted before the negotiation could be deemed completed.

Ngige said the two parties were able to agree on areas they could not previously agree on and would reconvene by seven o’clock this evening for further deliberations.

He explained that they were taking their time to avert fatal mistakes that could jeopardize the entire efforts, especially as Nigeria currently has twelve different wage structures.
