“Jamaican dancehall legend Buju Banton proudly claims his Igbo roots!”

Written by on August 19, 2024

During a recent appearance on the popular Drink Champs podcast, co-hosted by N.O.R.E and DJ EFN, the iconic singer unveiled his Igbo heritage, tracing his roots back to the tribe he refers to as the Morons, descendants of the Igbo people.

However, Buju Banton voiced deep concerns about the current state of affairs in his homeland, accusing the Jamaican government of threatening indigenous Maroon lands by allowing an influx of Chinese and other foreign nationals into the sacred Cockpit region.

“Our indigenous way of life and our land are under siege by the current Jamaican government, which is bringing Chinese and other nationalities into the Cockpit region, an indigenous sacred space, in a bid to displace us—the Maroons, the warriors,” he declared.

Buju further emphasized the significance of the Maroons as fierce indigenous warriors who fought the British relentlessly. “We are known as Black Maroons. My lineage traces back to Nigeria. By blood, I am an Igbo man,” he affirmed.
