Human Rights Lawyer Inibehe Effiong Calls For Urgent Review of Nigeria’s Criminal Justice System

Written by on August 26, 2022

Human rights lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, has made a case for urgent review of Nigeria’s Criminal Justice System.

Barrister Inibehe, who made the call in an interview shortly after he was released from the Uyo Correctional facility yesterday, decried what he termed incarceration of  innocent persons in correctional centres across the country with so many of them staying for long without trial.

While condemning the practice as an abuse of human dignity and rights, he said the needed change can only come when the nation’s justice delivery system is reformed.

The activist, who called on federal and state governments to initiate measures to decongest custodial facilities, added that a lot of inmates had been in custody for a period longer than the maximum sentence their alleged offences carry.

He urged state governments to implement the various measures undertaken by the government of President Muhammadu Buhari aimed at decongesting custodial facilities.

Our Reporter Tony Esin said Barrister Inibehe was released from prison in the early hours of today after completing the one month jail sentence pronounced on him by the Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaette Obot, allegedly for contempt of court.
