FRANCE

Workers at French state railway have embarked on a major strike, a move expected to paralyse rail travel across France.

The industrial action, which would also involve train drivers, is billed to last for three months, as trade unions push back against President Emmanuel Macron’s labour reforms.

Waste collection, electricity and energy sectors are also due to strike.

The Macron government wants to phase out the special state railway contracts, proposing to put new hires on contracts so as to open up the state railways to competition from 2023, in line with EU requirements.
