Nigerian hitmaker Flavour recalls the early days of his career.

In a recent interview on the *In My Opinion Podcast*, Flavour reflected on his journey to stardom.

Flavour recalled that his first professional gig was with rapper Nigga Raw (now Mr. Raw), where he played piano in the studio. Determined to take music seriously, Flavour approached Nigga Raw’s producer for lessons, paying 1,000 naira weekly for his musical education.

He eventually mastered music production and began charging artists 5,000 naira per beat. “I went from learning studio production to becoming a producer. From there, I started taking on projects and charged 5,000 per beat,” Flavour recounted.

Flavour also shared how he began accompanying Nigga Raw, who was one of the biggest artists in Eastern Nigeria at the time, to shows. It was during this period that Flavour recorded a chorus for one of Nigga Raw’s songs, which became a hit in the East and gave him his first taste of success.

Flavour credited Nigga Raw with teaching him what it meant to be an artist. “Nigga Raw was the one who opened my eyes to what being an artist is all about,” he explained, reflecting on the lessons he learned while working as a backup artist and spending time in the studio.

During the interview, Flavour also shared his early struggle between choosing RnB or Highlife as his musical path. He eventually decided that RnB wasn’t a profitable route and chose Highlife Fusion instead.

Flavour, now a legendary figure in Nigerian music, also recounted a pivotal moment when he received a career-changing call from the renowned music marketer Obaino Music, which led him to embark on a journey from Enugu to Lagos in search of fame.
