Anti Open Grazing Bill Becomes law in Akwa Ibom state

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel has signed into law the Bill for the Prohibition of open rearing and grazing of livestock in the state.

 

Mr Emmanuel gave his assent to the Bill in a brief ceremony at Government House, Uyo which was witnessed by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly and members of the State Executive Council.

 

The new law prescribes a N10 million fine against offenders.

 

The Open Rearing and Grazing of Livestock Prohibition Law of  the state also  provides for the establishment of the  State Livestock and Ranch Administration and Control Committee which  is expected to produce an integrated modern livestock development and production plan for the state.

 

Governor Udom Emmanuel said the new law will promote international best practices in livestock management and maximise the use of scarce land resources in the state.

 

He emphasised that the provisions of the law will be strictly enforced adding that a taskforce will be constituted to ensure compliance.
